A new technology gives birth to a piece of furniture, a remarkable invention becomes an elegant decorative object. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was the first to give the cantilever chair this aesthetic lightness and dynamic lines that give it body. Before the exhibition at the Weißenhof, of which he is the organizer, Mies van der Rohe discovered, thanks to Mart Stam, the principle of the cantilever chair. Despite the novelty of the concept, this first version of Mart Stam does not really appeal to Mies van der Rohe. The latter immediately transformed this technological innovation by creating his own aesthetic solution, which he presented in 1927. The S 533 chair was one of the first chairs with a sled base. At the same time, the large elegant arch drawn by its tubular steel base invests the surrounding space. Consciously reduced materials, elegant lines and transparent effects - these are the main characteristics of the S 533 chair. Its permanent spring effect also makes it particularly comfortable. If, in the 1920s, most of the creations were sober and functional, we can recognize here the signature of the architect: the resolutely luxurious concept of Mies van der Rohe combines functionality, comfort and a timeless aesthetic. The S 533 chair is the emblem of a new perception of quality.
