The lightness, the dynamism and the comfort of this armchair with sled base dating from the Bauhaus relegate to the background all that is heavy and inert. In 1930 there was something visionary about the modern styling of the S 35. Today it is part of our lifestyle, which is marked by mobility and individualism. By designing the S 35 armchair, Marcel Breuer manages to transpose all the functions of a tubular steel armchair with a sled base in a construction made of a single continuous steel tube, which also incorporates the armrests. The designer thus obtains a double spring effect: the armrests oscillate independently of the seat and counterbalance the oscillating movements of the structure of the seat and of the backrest cantilevered towards the rear. For even more comfort, this armchair is accompanied by a matching footrest, also with a sled base. The comfortable S 35 club chair made its first appearance in 1930 during the now famous presentation of the Deutscher Werkbund at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in Paris. It was then among the pieces of furniture for a prototype apartment building produced by Marcel Breuer with the help of Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer.
